William Sydney Porter was his real name. he was born in 1862 in North Carolina. He was raised by his grandmother and aunt. He moved to Houston Texas when he was 15 and worked on ranches, drug stores and as a bank clerk. William changed his name to O'Henry in 1901, after spending 3 years in prison for embezzling money. O'henry wrote over 600 short stories. His later years were not well, he battled with alcoholism, financial problems and ill health. He died in 1910 from cirrhosis of the liver. O'Henry is one of the most well known short stories of all time.
